Labor of love is writing a play.

by Joni Arredia

1.

The process of writing STOOP TIME was laborious and magical.  The characters become so dear to you that they never stray far from your thoughts.

Then one day you say to yourself this story needs to be heard.  To put a play, your baby, on the stage takes guts and faith in a power you cannot see.  Faith that you will discover amazing talent, who know much more than you possibly ever could.  Then it’s the letting go and we all know how hard that can be. In order to receive greatness from others you have to trust in their ability.  That is precisely what I’m doing.

A New Play: From DePaul University to Haiti and Beyond

The idea to write STOOP TIME started by hanging out on my front stoop and the story evolved from there. It’s seems to me that every person I meet has their own, heart-warming and heart-wrenching story. We all need to be seen and heard with loving eyes and ears.

That is my gift to perfect strangers, and for that moment on the stoop, they become my perfect friends.  This God given gift I found works wherever my heart-felt wings take me in this not so perfect world of ours.

STOOP TIME runs July 19 - August 10, 2014, Thurs.- Sat. at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 3:00pm at Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago IL.  Tickets range from $15-$32. Purchase the www.greenhousetheater.org or call 773-404-7336. Previews: July 17 and July 18 at 7:30. Opening Night on July 19, 2014 at 7:30pm.

I've been bitten by Haitian love.

I've been bitten by Haitian love.

Haiti.  The most poverty stricken country in the Western Hemisphere has become my truest passion in the last two years.  It’s why I dedicated the 2nd Act of STOOP TIME to this country.

My experience in Haiti has been one of simple acts of kindness to those in need by giving them a sense of worth and dignity in all things.  Through the non-profit 501c3 organization, Hut Outreach, which I am proud to be a team member, we are able to provide basic life sustaining needs to the Haitian people of Les Cayes, Haiti.  Hut Outreach has proven to me that when a dollar is donated, every penny of that dollar goes to the Haitian people. Rare, very rare indeed.

You&Me Productions

1.

You&Me Productions is a multi-faceted production company in Chicago, IL.  Founded in 2011 by Joni Arredia, You&Me is dedicated to providing support and opportunities of artistic expression.  It began with my first world premiere play RESURFACING which I self-produced and co-wrote with Emily Vajda in 2011.  STOOP TIME is the second world premiere to be under this umbrella. It will continue on as long as there are artists who believe in imagination and have the courage to share their artistry with the world.

Why write a blog? It's another way in this highly communicable world to share the written word, in full sentences and with complete thoughts.  A blog is a lovely platform for the causes I care about; Empowering women, the arts, the theatre, and Hut Outreach in Les Cayes, Haiti.
